  • Community Credit Prizes for February 2008

Note: As always, our prize list can be found on our "Stupid Prizes Page"Check it out to see past prizes and contest winners.

The items below show the prizes that you can win at Community-Credit this month(February 2008 ). You can have a chance at earning one of these prizes by contributing to the development community this month.  Simply log your contributions (points awarded for over 100 types of contributions) and the geeks with the most points at the end of February 2008 Contest will win one of the prizes shown below. You can also see the past winners and prizes on our Stupid Prize Page.

But first... a word from our Sponsor: StupidCubicle.com
This month we are happy to have a brand new sponsor. It is our sister site, StupidCubicle.com . The site only has a few products right now, but they are cool products. Be sure to give them some love.  Drop us an email and let us know what you think.

    Onto this Month's Prizes...
Grand Prize: Touchscreen Cell Phone/PDA Wristwatch

Lets get it out in the open. We've all lusted after wristwatch cell phones before cell phones even existed. Hey, we love our iPhones... but there's something irresistible about talking *** Tracy style into your watch. Fortunately we don't have to play favorites because the Touchscreen Cell Phone/PDA Wristwatch is an unlocked GSM cell phone. Just pop your existing sim card out of the top of your iPhone (or other GSM Cell Phone from AT&T/Cingular or T-Mobile) and insert it into the back of the watch and power it up. Call your standard cell phone number and your wrist will start ringing.

The Touchscreen Cell Phone Wristwatch has a great feature set considering it's small size. Of course you can make and receive calls (dial by pulling the tiny included stylus from the side of the watch and tapping the numbers on the screen) but you can also play MP3 files, watch movies, store hundreds of phone numbers and send SMS messages and enter schedules or notes with basic handwriting recognition. With 60 Meg of built in storage, you're not going to get tons of media onto the watch but it's sweet that it can do it. If you find the volume of the built in speakerphone to be a bit low, you can even use the included bluetooth headset or wired headphones for best performance (any other bluetooth headset will work as well).

1st Prize: The Television Interactive Snowboarding Game.

This digital game plugs into your television and translates a rider's weight shifts into movement on screen, allowing young snowboarders to challenge lifelike slopes at any time without the need for a mountain or winter weather. The snowboard system includes four game modes (show-off, time challenge, pipedream, and Tokyo megaplex) in which boarders can race, carve turns, and execute jumps and other aerial maneuvers on the virtual mountain simply by moving their body weight as they would on a real snowboard. The game graphics depict a wide variety of snowboarding terrain and objects, including slopes, moguls, jumps, half-pipes, alpine forests, mountain ranges, and other skiers and snowboarders. Authe ntic sounds like the swift susurrus of a board on snow and the voices of race announcers enhance game realism

2nd Prize: Sonic Bomb Alarm Clock with Bed Shaker

Even Ninjas need their sleep. For a Ninja, sleep is a time of renewal, contemplation, and rejuvenation. And when a Ninja sleeps, it is a very deep sleep. Most sleeping Ninjas can only be roused from slumber by another Ninja, which is a big problem if you are a Ninja, are tired, must wake up for a secret Ninja mission, and the only Ninja in your office. Good thing we found the Sonic Bomb Clock - it will wake even the soundest Ninja Nap.

3rd Prize: "Back Off" LED Invaders Door Mat

Contrary to popular belief, here at ThinkGeek we do sometimes like the company of humans. But frankly we've gotten pretty tired of folks knocking at the ThinkGeek secret headquarters of doom during our daily extended gadget play time. Aliens, robots and the UPS guy are welcome anytime, but to deter those other annoying carbon based life forms we've installed the Back Off LED Invaders Door Mat. This nifty doormat is imported from France and features a glowing display and motion sensor. Any time someone comes near, a glowing green space invader moves back and forth across the top of the mat. Potential guests, having left their phasers at home, will usually run shrieking in fear.

5th Prize: Mix Tape USB Stick

Remember in the days before digital music and MP3 players? If you do, then you probably made compilations of all your favourite music, to share with your friends and loved ones, on good old fashioned blank cassette tapes. If you miss making mix tapes this product will inspire you again!

6th Prize: Halo 3 Messenger Bag

If you're a cybernetically enhanced human in a Mjölnir Mark VI combat suit, and you've got to save the galaxy from being sterilized by fire, you need to carry quite an arsenal with you. Unfortunately, the designers of the armor you're wearing forgot to include pockets.

You've got to be able to carry up to 8 grenades, 1 powerup, and a secondary weapon, not to mention all the ammunition. Luckily, the fine folks at the United Nations Space Command developed a bag that's got more than enough room without looking like a purse. Two bags, in khaki and gray, have six zippered and velcroed interior compartments big enough to carry your entire stockpile of death-dealing equipment... Or a couple of textbooks, 15" laptop, iPod, cellphone, pens, papers...

7th Prize: The Weird Al Show Complete Series DVD Set

Weird Al Yankovic's signature warped comedy, original songs, TV and movies spoofs and off-beat animation are what makes this 13 episode, 1997 CBS Saturday morning series a treasure chest of all things Al. Includes performances by Bill Murray, Dr.Demento, Stan Freburg and, of course, Grammy award winning Weird Al himself.

8th Prize: Simpson LED USB Desk Light

Homer says “I'm just not that bright" but you’ll be with this Homer Simpson USB powered LED light on your desk.

    9th Prize: Wi-Fi Detecting Watch

For a geek on the go, checking for wi-fi is like checking to see if it's raining outside. It's an essential resource that is necessary for proper operation of the many gadgets that we carry. When wi-fi is not available it can really rain on your parade and cause you to go searching for a nice safe place to connect.

    10th Prize: Racing Grannies

Two high-octane octogenarians rev up their wheelchairs and spin around the 10-piece track; individual controls keep the action going.

11th Prize: Butt Station Desktop Organizer

He looks like he's sitting down on the job; in fact, he's got everything under control. This fabulous modern piece combines the function of your tape dispenser, paper clip dish, sticky note holder and pen stash, all in one funny unit. Bonus: Magnetic hiney. Need we say more?

12th Prize: Talking Toilet Paper Holder

Talking TP makes going to the bathroom a startling and memorable experience for your friends and family! You can record or re-record a voice message or sound up to 6 seconds long and it plays automatically when someone unrolls the toilet paper!

13th Prize: Dummy Security Camera with Blinking LED

Sometimes security is designed to be barely noticeable, so as not to detract from the main event or draw any attention. Other times, it is deliberately obvious to tell would-be wrongdoers "don't even think about it". The Dummy Security Camera with Blinking LED lets any hooligans know that someone could be watching their every move or at least taking some video footage of their devious deeds.

    15th Prize: Microserfs

The novel begins with a glimpse into the lives of employees of Microsoft: the people that create the technology that sits on the majority of office desks in the world. Microsoft is portrayed as having a feudalistic structure, with Bill Gates as its lord and the employees as Microserfs. The characters, most of them in their early or mid-twenties, share the same workplace and home in the Seattle area. They decry their employment situation and the effects it has on their social lives: their daily schedules are dictated by software product cycles.

When one of them decides to leave Microsoft and found a software company to create a Lego-like software toy called "Oop!" (a reference to object-oriented programming), the others jump at the opportunity to join him in California. They leave behind stability and job security for the relative unknowns of a start-up company. The characters are driven not only by the chance that their software product will be financially successful, but also by the chance to be "One-Point-Oh": "To be the first to do the first version of something". The novel examines the effects on their personal lives of their struggle to obtain venture capital and bring their software to market.

  • 2008 Inductees to the Community Credit Hall of Fame

I am proud to announce our latest inductees into the hall of fame.  This award is long overdue and includes inductees not only for this past year, but or the past two years.  Everybody who has been inducted into the Hall of Fame has demonstrated a level of committment to the development community that goes well above the norm.  These individuals are the Rock Stars of the Development Community World.  Congrats to all!  Below, I am including the names of all of the inductees and a few words about each, describing the reasons that they were selected.

    Lorenzo Barbieri
If there were a World Record for contributions to the development community, Lorenzo Barbieri would probably be in the Guiness Book right now. Although he has been rewarded 9 times, he has been quiet in Community Credit for the last several months. However, a testimonial to his activity is that even though he has not recorded his activities as of late, the enormity of his contributions clinched him in the #1 All-Time Contributor spot for close to a year.

    Anand Narayanaswamy
Anand demonstrates that you can't keep a good man down. He has been rewarded a record breaking 17 times. This means that essentially every month that he has participated, he has been rewarded. Even under a curve, he is not deterred. When folks ask if the curve will make it impossible for them to win, I always point them to Anand's history.

    Lou Vega
Lou Vega has been one of the Mainstay's of Community Credit. His profile speaks for itself. He has spoken at numerous Code Camps, user group meetings, he is an avid blogger, very active on discussion board and the many other things that truly help to support the development community. He is also a very motivational leader, always having words of encouragement to others in the development community and working with others to help them get started as speakers in user groups and code camps.

    Simone Chiaretta
Simone has been active in the Development Community in some very unique ways. If you view his profile you will see that he has contributions in over 30 different categories. He is an extremely active bloger, blogging almost on a daily basis. He has also supported Community Credit in some very profound ways, the most notable being the developer of the Community Server Add On for community credit. That contribution is only rivaled by his integration of Community Credit into Subtext. With these integrations, he has helped others to get recognized and truly spread the underlying message of Community Credit.

    Jeff Julian
Jeff Julian is a Rockstar that is known far and wide. Although relatively new to Community Credit, Community Credit has known and respected him for the longest time through his involvement in User Groups, Conferences and numerous Developer Communities. One of his most widely known communities is GeeksWithBlogs.net, which is a veritable who's who of well respected Geek Bloggers.

    Brad Jones
Brad Jones is also a very prolific winner, having been rewarded 13 times. Brad is another contributor wins almost every time he records his contributions. One of the nice aspects of Brad's involvement in the community is that, although he has been rewarded with some very cool prizes, he offers them to his user group as raffle prizes. It is a nice way to inspire others to participate.

    Michele Locuratelo
Michele has been very long overdue to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. On top of all of his contributions to the development community in Italy, he is one of the folks that helps to approve submissions. Past accomplishments include helping to reward a member of his community, DotNetSide.org, with a Visual Studio Team Suite (one which he could have kept, but selflessly made sure that his community members receieved it instead.).

    HimaBindu Vejella
HimaBindu is a very active member of many different communities, an active MVP and is recognized as a leading contributor to numerous communities. One aspect of Hima that I think differentiates her from many of her peers is how she is very encouraging to others in her posts and is always helping others. On top of that, her profile shows a wide variety of submissions types spanning almost 40 categories.

    Sukanya Vejella
Sukanya, also an MVP, is one who has a very impressive history of contributions to the development community. She is a very active contributor on discusson boards, often answer between 10 to 20 questions per day. Sukanya has been rewarded in Community Credit on five different occassions and has recorded over 1200 submissions to date.

    Scott Dorman
Scott Dorman, a C# MVP, is one of the members of the community that I know personally and I can attest to his contributions to the development community since I have participated in many of them with him. He is a frequent speaker at User Groups and CodeCamps, he Blogs like a madman and a very well respected member of many communities, including CodeProject where he was named a CodeProject MVP this year. He has been rewarded 5 times in Community Credit and has logged almost 2,000 submissions.

    Emanuele Mattei
Emanuele is a very serious member of the Developer Community in Italy. While he has only been rewarded twice, which is low in comparison to some of the other members being recognized, he was the grand prize winner in both of the months in which he participated.

    Vito Arconzo
Vito Arconzo is a very active member of our community. Not only has he written his first book on WPF over the last year, but he has been an extremely active blogger, including giving regular feedback to blog posts of others. He is also a very frequent participant in discussion boards. Vito has been rewarded 8 seperate times in Community Credit.

    Marco Minerva
Marco has been extremely active over the last year and if you view his profile, you have to scroll down quite a bit to see all of his contributions. In his history, he has been rewarded on 7 different months.

    Mickey Gousset
Mickey Gousset, a Team Systems MVP, has been a very active blogger, blogging on an almost daily basis. Mickey runs a site, TeamSystemsRocks.com and the name speaks for itself regarding his attitude toward Teams System. In addition to his blogging, he has a very regular series of Webcasts on Team Systems. Mickey has been rewarded 5 times in Communnity Credit.

    Stephan Schmidt
Stephan Schmidt has also been active in community credit for a very long time. He has a very active community, SmartPhone-Web.com as well as an MVP and he was been rewarded time after time by consistently submitting the great content that he publishes on his website. On any given day, he publishes high quality content on his site.

    Deepak Vasudevan
Deepak Vasudevan has been a supporter of the development community for as long as I have known about him as well as being a great supporter of Ccommunity Credit. Although many people may not be aware of his contributions in community credit, he is always suggesting improvements to it and feedback, many times in very technical details. He is also very well known and recognized by virtually every development community that he is involved in. He is a great leader among geeks.

    Alex Januschewsky
Alex Januschewsky, a Windows Mobile MVP, is a very well known and well respected champion in the Austrian IT Professionals community. His list of presentations at User Groups and Conferences seems to go on almost indefinitely and pales only in comparison to his list of published articles. From a website perspective, he is best known for his site Mobility News. As a result of his overwhelming level of contributions, he earned nearly 1 million points of recognition in just a few short months and you always new when he was involved. He has been in the All Time contributors list since June of 2006.
