    The Wal-Mart Virus

The spread of Wal-Mart is somewhat of a phenomenon. Since its birth in Arkansas back in 1962, its worldwide growth has been staggering.

Seeing the American growth plotted out on a map of the U.S. is remarkable to watch.

Each dot represents one new Walmart...

Interesting to put it visually - I always knew there were a lot of Walmart's across the U.S., but never seen them displayed out on a map like that.

It is also interesting to see how many Walmarts there are in the East vs the West.  Perhaps if the animation continued, we would see more out West.  I assumed that they were spread out all across the country.... like a virus. :)

In my area (Chennai, India), you can find mobile retailers like WaveTel, Poorvika doing this. Every two kilometers, these guys are now busy opening one showroom and in Sunday newspapers, you can find full page advertisements of them offering diversified discounts and freebies for mobile purchase.
